IBAN Structure Belgium

Last reviewed: · Source: ISO 13616 / SWIFT IBAN Registry

Belgium has one of the shortest IBANs in Western Europe at 16 characters, following the pattern BEkk BBBC CCCC CCKK. After BE and two check digits come a 3-digit bank code (e.g. 539 for Bank Degroof, 053 for Argenta), the 7-digit account number and two national control digits. The old 12-digit BBAN form (3 + 7 + 2) is still familiar in Belgian business, but every bank has required the IBAN on payment orders since 2014. Belgium is a euro member and fully SEPA-integrated, so the IBAN alone suffices for euro transfers.
