IBAN Structure Spain

Last reviewed: · Source: ISO 13616 / SWIFT IBAN Registry

Spain's IBAN is 24 characters long in the format ESkk BBBB GGGG KKCC CCCC CCCC. After ES and the IBAN check digits come a 4-digit bank code (Código de entidad), a 4-digit branch code (Código de oficina), two national control digits (Dígitos de control) and the 10-digit account number. Notably, the Spanish IBAN carries two check systems — the international MOD-97 (ISO 7064) and the national control digits inherited from the older CCC format (Código Cuenta Cliente). Both are validated separately. Spain is in the euro area and SEPA, so the IBAN alone is enough for euro transfers, at the same cost as a domestic payment.
