IBAN Structure Italy

Last reviewed: · Source: ISO 13616 / SWIFT IBAN Registry

Italy's IBAN has 27 characters in the format ITkk XBBB BBGG GGGC CCCC CCCC CCC. After IT and the IBAN check digits comes a single national check character (CIN), then the 5-digit ABI code (bank identifier of the Associazione Bancaria Italiana), the 5-digit CAB code (branch) and the 12-character account number (Numero di conto). The older BBAN form — CIN + ABI + CAB + Conto — still appears on Italian business documents. The CIN is computed by its own method and complements the IBAN check digits as extra protection against typos. Italy is in the euro area and SEPA, so a euro transfer needs only the IBAN.
