Italy's IBAN has 27 characters in the format ITkk XBBB BBGG GGGC CCCC CCCC CCC. After IT and the IBAN check digits comes a single national check character (CIN), then the 5-digit ABI code (bank identifier of the Associazione Bancaria Italiana), the 5-digit CAB code (branch) and the 12-character account number (Numero di conto). The older BBAN form — CIN + ABI + CAB + Conto — still appears on Italian business documents. The CIN is computed by its own method and complements the IBAN check digits as extra protection against typos. For payments from EU/EEA banks to Italy, required routing details depend on the bank, currency and route; check them in advance with your bank.
