IBAN Structure Netherlands

Last reviewed: · Source: ISO 13616 / SWIFT IBAN Registry

The Netherlands has the shortest IBAN in Western Europe at 18 characters, following the pattern NLkk BBBB CCCC CCCC CC. After NL and two check digits come a 4-letter bank code (e.g. INGB for ING, RABO for Rabobank, ABNA for ABN AMRO) and the 10-digit account number. The Netherlands switched to the IBAN in 2014 with the rest of SEPA and no longer maintains a separate national bank-identifier system — the 4-letter code in the IBAN is the only bank identifier. Within SEPA the BIC has not been required since 2016, and euro transfers cost the same as a domestic payment.
