IBAN Structure France

Last reviewed: · Source: ISO 13616 / SWIFT IBAN Registry

France's IBAN has 27 characters in the format FRkk BBBB BGGG GGCC CCCC CCCC CKK. It begins with FR and two check digits, then a 5-digit bank code (Code Banque), a 5-digit branch code (Code Guichet), an 11-character account number (Numéro de compte) and a two-digit national check key (Clé RIB). France was among the first countries to make the IBAN mandatory domestically. The historic RIB notation stays in parallel use: Banque + Guichet + Compte + Clé RIB carry the same information as IBAN positions 5–27. As a euro-area and SEPA member, France needs only the IBAN for euro transfers — the BIC is no longer required.
